SO sad to read that Cilla Black thinks “it’s no fun getting older” (Echo, July 12). She couldn’t be more wrong.

Just because you are getting older is no excuse for not having fun. I’m 73, two years older than Cilla, but I still lead a very full life with my work, hobbies and plenty of exercise. Next month I make my debut at the Edinburgh Fringe with my oneman show The Genius of Charles Dickens.

After 30 years running marathons and shorter distances (including the Great North Run 25 times) I had to stop due to wear and tear on the knees, but I have compensated by taking up long-distance walking.

Cilla is to be admired for continuing her career after the death of her beloved husband and manager Bobby in 1999. As an icon and a role model to many of my generation.
