THIS week we delve in to some of the packets in The Northern Echo’s photo library which contain old pictures of Darlington. This is what we pulled out. If any of it brings back any memories, or you have any information about anything pictured, please let us know.
This is Darlington in 1968, before the inner ring road was built. In the bottom left hand corner, you will see St Cuthbert's Church, and in the top right are the three chimneys and the three cooling towers of the power station. But can you also find Peases Mill and its octagonal chimney? The thin Cricketers pub? The junction between East Street, Clay Row and Freemans Place (where Halfords is today)? The old tram depot where Bannatyne's gym is today? And the round engine shed to the east of the mainline? And, behind the Civic Theatre, is a tower from which the picture in the gallery of St Hilda's Church was taken.
