TWO sixth form teachers will take part in a gruelling 300-mile bike ride across the North Yorkshire Moors in two days to help injured servicemen and women.

The pair, who work at Stockton Riverside College's Bede sixth form campus in Billingham, are tackling the ride in aid of Help for Heroes.

Chemistry teacher Robert Spink said: "It will be a challenge but it helps knowing that you are raising money for a good cause."

Carl Mustill, who teaches business and economics, said: "Doing 150 miles in one day will be hard, so getting up and doing the same the next day will be the real test."

About 20 riders will be taking part in the 300-mile challenge, which is part of the Ferryhill Wheelers Cycling Club's 90th anniversary celebrations.

The route will see the cyclists travel from Ferryhill to Saltburn, across to Morecambe and then back to Ferryhill through the Lake District.

They will stop off for lunch at the Phoenix House Recovery Centre in Catterick Garrison, meeting some of the recovering service men and women, to give the cyclists the extra push to keep pedalling.

Mr Spink and Mr Mustill are both keen cyclists who have been putting in the groundwork in preparation for the event, which takes place in July.

They cycle to and from work, as well as training up to five times a week, and each regularly cover an average of 150 to 200 miles per week.

However, the most they have cycled in one day is 130 miles - meaning the challenge will be a test of their grit and determination.

Mr Mustill said: "This might seem like a challenge to us, but it is nothing in comparison to the challenges some service personnel have had to face through injury.”

He said it was knowing they were cycling for a worthy cause that would help keep them going.
