David Beckham Into The Unknown (BBC1, 8.30pm)

LET’S face it, the player formerly known as Goldenballs probably doesn’t have the voice required when it comes to World cup punditry. Instead, the tattoed champion of soccer, David Beckham, has gone down the just as familiar celebrity route of grabbing a handful of his best mates and embarking on a journey to the jungles of Brazil.

Along with renowned photographer and video director Anthony Mandler, Derek White, who as an experienced motorbike rider should be able to get them out of a mechanical fix, and Dave Gardner, Becks' best friend since they were 14 years old, the well-known ball bender sets out from Rio, where he's quickly recognised by fans and paparazzi.

Their bikes give them a speedy getaway, though, and helmets afford them some anonymity, and before long they escape to a favela – where Beckham spots a game of foot-volleyball and can't resist joining in, to the delight of the participants. The next day sees them arrive in a remote paradise, and they embark on a jungle trek into the Amazon, where fame means nothing.

The quartet quickly realise that they miss their home comforts, with Beckham’s equally well-known wife Posh already expressing anxiety about the state of his hair (perhaps Sir Alec can go along as the hairdryer). They're forced to set up camp in the middle of nowhere, amid some pretty basic conditions, bedding down in hammocks and hoping the jungle nightlife leaves them alone. For someone used to five-star luxury, Beckham is quite far out of his comfort zone. After 800 gruelling miles they arrive at the tiny airstrip which will take them to the home of the Yanonami tribe – a remote territory where few Westerners have ever set foot.

Gail & Me: 40 Years on Coronation Street (ITV, 8pm)

HAS anyone in Coronation Street ever been as unlucky as Gail Potter-Tilsley-Platt-Hillman-McIntyre? After five marriages (twice to Brian Tilsley) and widowed three times – only Martin Platt made it out alive. Her last real love interest was Lewis (played by Nigel Havers), and even he did a runner with the contents of her savings account.

But she hasn't always been the character we exasperatedly shout advice at. Helen Worth was originally recruited back in 1974 to bring a little glamour and youthful energy to the cobbles.

Dramatic storylines, including discovering her 13-year-old daughter was pregnant, and marrying the man she would later dub "Norman Bates with a briefcase", serial killer Richard Hillman, have given her a gale-warning when it comes to men.

Amanda Barrie (Alma Halliwell), Cheryl Murray (Suzie Birchall), Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts) and Ben Price (Nick Tilsley) are also on hand to share their memories of Helen/Gail.

CCTV: Caught on Camera (Channel 4, 10pm)

I'M always a sucker for these reality "caught on camera" shows, and this three-part series puts the focus on the people who monitor some of Britain's estimated 5.9 million closed-circuit television cameras. The first programme visits Southampton, where 19 council-owned tower blocks are monitored 24 hours a day.

The programme-makers seeks the views of the tenants as the documentary puts a human face to Big Brother as we finds out exactly who is watching the footage – and raises some thought-provoking questions about whether the proliferation of cameras really does play a role in reducing crime.
