CALL me Mr Picky, but I suspect that two people touted as TV’s greatest detectives would have deduced how they feel about each after six years.

Sadly not, in the case of Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) who have been skirting around the issue like a couple of government ministers trying to cycle out the gates of No 10.

When Jane walked into Lisbon’s office six years ago to try to find the man who killed his wife and child, the attraction was instant.

But the all-too-familiar “Will they, won’t they?” plot has been given a new twist by the arrival of FBI Agent Pike (Pedro Pascal), a man who isn’t prepared to let Teresa slip through his fingers.

We’ve watched Jane forlornly accept that Lisbon is going to move to Washington DC with Pike.

In the last of the current series, when a new lead in a cold case requires her to put her DC relocation plans on hold.

As always, the enigmatic Jane is unlikely to reveal his feelings in straightforward fashion, and may very well be the cliffhanger required for a new series.

Ballykissangel/Trial & Retribution veteran Victoria Smurfit is among the guest stars tonight Does Tunney think the show will end if Jane and Lisbon did get together?

“I don’t ask because I feel like it would change the way I play it, or affect the way I play it,” she explains.

“I like the ambiguity because there are days when I go to work and we play it and I’m like: ‘I’m definitely in love with him’. And another day I’ll say ‘There’s absolutely no way Lisbon would get together with this guy. He’s awful. He’s using her for all these things. He never gives back’.”

In the often fierce US ratings war, The Mentalist fans like me can breathe a little easier that series sun got the green light this month.

“I’m gonna be sad when it’s all over,”

Tunney explains. “You know it’s a family, and it’s been a great run.”
