IN this new age of fake news and alternative facts, it perhaps does not surprise me that Martin Jones saw fit to sensationalise a recent town council meeting (HAS, Jan 12).

Durham County Council have not made plans to grant planning permission for 338 houses in Middlestone Moor as he has indicated.

In fact, at the town council meeting that Mr Jones attended, we were specifically and clearly informed by Independent county councillor Kevin Thompson that Durham County Council had not yet made a proposal.

The outline application for this development, which I opposed as leader of the town council in 2014, was subsequently refused by Durham County Council.

However, that decision was later overturned by the national Planning Inspector and now it seems likely that the development will go ahead despite our efforts.

The town council has again unanimously opposed the development on sight of this detailed application. We can only hope that national policy will allow our voices to be heard.
