YOU support life sentences for killer drivers (“Life term is a deterrent”, Opinion, Oct 14).

A big flaw in that idea is that it costs about £50,000 a year to keep someone in prison: a cost born by the country as a whole. Thus that punishment is as much a punishment imposed on the country as a whole as it is a punishment imposed on the killer driver.

In contrast, a lifetime driving ban on relevant individuals solves the problem that they’re a danger to society. It is also a significant punishment, plus there is no cost to you, me and the rest of the country.
