GIVEN the extensive and hugely costly redevelopments in Durham City, it is disgraceful that the old Durham Baths, along Elvet waterside, have been left derelict for so long.

Shamefully abandoned to the mercy of vandals since 2008, this once impressive building still has much potential.

There is talk that the University hope to acquire it for a business school.

However, there is already far too much emphasis on outsiders - visitors and students.

Locals would much prefer this cherished example of Durham’s heritage be sensitively converted into something of far more relevance to themselves as rate payers.

Suggestions are for a concert venue or art gallery, incorporating the much-lamented DLI Museum. Such a development could be extended to the adjacent desolate bowling green and decaying outbuildings, creating exciting locally themed facilities to be enjoyed by the adults and children of Durham alike.

Granted, parking facilities are restricted, but it should not be beyond the wit of man to include the venue into the city’s Park and Ride routes.

Come on Durham councillors do something for the people who elect you for a change!
