TWO weeks ago, caravans and road plant equipment was driven onto the Durham County Council site at Etherley Lane near Bishop Auckland.

Local residents were curious as no notification had been given about activity on the site or its sale.

Then a generator was started up for continuous use. A concerned neighbour approached the site to be told by a Polish man with little English: “Two weeks Kynren”.

It was assumed that the operation had something to do with roadworks.

After few days of continuous traffic, large plant vehicles coming and going, a neighbour approached the local councillor and MP but at that time received no reply from either. A phone call to Kynren told us it was nothing to do with them.

Neighbour then approached the council but it had no knowledge and sent a representative to the site. He received a telephone number of Polish owners from Birmingham who said all the caravans, wagons etc would be off site by Saturday, June 24, which they were.

The council said it knew nothing of the reason the vehicles were there and that they were illegally on the land.

Worrying, yes. Still we don’t know why they were there, or who these people were, or who let them through the gates onto council land.

In today’s world, you would think there should be an answer somewhere. Anyone out there know?
