IT'S a new year, but it's already turning into a nightmare for Steve and Michelle in Coronation Street (ITV). At the baby shower thrown for her and Leanne, Michelle is taken to hospital after feeling a pain. Steve rushes to be by her side, and discovers that her waters have broken, his wife is in labour and, most distressing of all, their baby isn't developed enough to survive.

As the devastated couple say their farewells to little Ruairi, Steve blames himself for what has happened, claiming it's punishment for having cheated on his wife with Leanne. Leanne, meanwhile, has conflicting feelings – she's upset by their plight, but also concerned for the future of her own baby. What will happen if Steve decides he now wants access to their child?

Elsewhere, Eva blackmails Peter into dropping his claim on Underworld by threatening to tell Leanne about his relationship with Toyah.

Nathan inspires Bethany to complete her A levels while studying beauty therapy at night school, and Phelan ramps up the pressure on Kevin.

Carmel throws a surprise baby shower for Denise in EastEnders (BBC1) – which would have been a nice gesture if the expectant mum wasn't planning to give her child up for adoption.

As if sitting through all that cooing and present-opening wasn't awkward enough, Denise manages to have an even worse time at the Vic's Italian night when Shirley corners her in the pub toilets to ask if Buster is the baby's father.

After all that, it's probably a relief when Denise heads to hospital to be induced, although she's unlikely to get any peace and privacy there either, especially once Kim shows up...

Meanwhile, Mick goes to desperate lengths to help Elaine and Linda, but Whitney hopes to take his mind off his troubles with a birthday celebration. Sadly, that doesn't go to plan as Mick secretly tells Lee to get a refund on his present, and Babe accuses Whitney of being the cause of all of her husband's troubles.

Phil is out of hospital, Bex has to make a decision about her future and after an emotional few weeks, some big secrets are set to explode in Walford.

We all know Cain has a dark side and it's on full display this week in Emmerdale (ITV) when little Kyle starts acting up – and his dad reacts by raising his fists. Fortunately, Cain shocks himself as well as the youngster, and makes a big decision about his son's future.

Don't worry though, Cain isn't about to make a New Year's resolution to give up threatening behaviour altogether as he later visits Lachlan in prison to deliver a sinister warning. But what will this mean for the teen's trial, especially after Ronnie finds out that Lawrence was in on the plan to frame Andy?

Elsewhere, Chas is looking forward to embarrassing Charity with a surprise birthday party, but instead risks totally humiliating her when no one shows up.

Pierce is unhappy about the Woolpack's "hunk night", and not just because he wasn't invited to be part of the line-up, while Tracy hopes that an Adonis named Nathan will take Finn's mind off Kasim. However, Rebecca is sticking to the local talent as she becomes the latest female resident to fall for Ross' dubious charms.
