Six Wives with Lucy Worsley (BBC1, 9pm)

TEENAGER Catherine Howard features in this history of the woman unfortunate enough to have married Henry VIII. He was then 49 and, in her role of unspeaking maid, Worsley observes Catherine confessing to adultery before being convicted of treason and beheaded.

The fate of Henry's last three wives includes the king's doomed courtship with Anne of Cleeves, with the monarch successfully reneging on their marriage having claimed it had yet to be consummated. In comparison to the others, being rejected by the king of England turned out to be quite fortunate, because Anne secured a huge settlement from the embarrassed English court.

Finally, Worsley explores Henry's relationship with his last wife. Katherine Parr, and how she managed to win Henry round despite their greatly differing religious beliefs... and survived death by her sheer intelligence. Last in the series.
