Ripper Street (BBC2, 9pm)

IT looks like this Victorian crime thriller is refusing to leave the 1800s with creator Richard Warlow claiming that his hit Amazon Prime and BBC series will not enter the 20th century.

"It began in the high summer of Queen Victoria's Jubilee celebrations and will end on the stroke of midnight as Whitechapel steps into the 20th century," Warlow told Radio Times. "H Division will not be stepping into the year 1900. Not on our beat."

The writer has also hinted that justice is coming to Ripper Street, particularly for Long Susan Hart (Myanna Buring), who is currently imprisoned for her involvement in the catastrophic train derailment of the last series. Tonight we see Captain Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg ), H Division's surgeon, coming under increasing pressure from his wife, Long Susan – who has become a mother within the walls of Newgate prison – where she is awaiting execution for her part in the Leman Street locomotive disaster of 1894.

She has become consumed by the knowledge that the Whitechapel murderess is still alive and intent on coming back for her son. Another one feeling the tension is DI Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfayden). The former chief inspector of H Division, had planned to spend the rest of his days in self-imposed exile and secluded retirement in the quiet seaside village of Hampton-on-Sea. But that didn't last long once old acquaintance Deborah Goren (Lucy Cohu) paid him an unexpected visit at the beginning of the season.

Over the past few weeks it has seemed that Reid and his former right-hand man Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn), now head of H Division, have found their working dynamic once more. But the chaotic world of Ripper Street forces the duo to deal with a difficult murder case that threatens to open old wounds.

A young man named Thomas Gower has been found murdered and the investigation takes our heroes to the Thames Ironworks, and into the brutal world of Victorian football. A bitemark on the body leads Jackson to the conclusion that the Whitechapel Golem didn't die with Isaac Bloom after all, and as the victim was saved from the hangman's noose many years ago by Drake, cracks begin to emerge in Drake and Reid's volatile relationship.

It's sad for fans to be told that the end is nigh for H Division, but it's going to be fascinating to see how it all plays out.

"Edmund Reid, Bennet Drake, Long Susan Hart and Homer Jackson will really get what is coming to them," Warlow says.
