CD Reviews: Charles Lloyd/Manhattan Stories (Resonance HCD2016) This 2CD or 2LP set features two previously unissued performances in New York in 1965. Recorded between Lloyd’s stint with Chico Hamilton’s Quintet and his sensationally successful Quartet with Keith Jarrett, this all-star group features guitarist Gabor Szabo, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Pete La Roca with Lloyd on both tenor sax and flute. Sound quality, the musical rapport and atmosphere are stunning, all combined in a wonderful package. resonancerecords.com

Alex Garnett’s Bunch of 5/Andromeda (Whirlwind WR4664) London-based tenor players Alex Garnett and New York-based Tim Armacost struck up a mutual friendship some years ago but this is their first album. With tremendous support from Liam Noble, Michael Janisch and James Maddren and a batch of attractive originals by Alex this is a thoroughly enjoyable and swinging set. whirlwindrecordings.com
