APRIL in Paris is centred on a tumultuous relationship between Al (Joe McGann) and Bet (Shobna Gulati).

The brilliantly produced and directed play tells the story of a couple at loggerheads and when Al wins a trip to Paris the couple’s strained relationship is brought together through a mutual love of the city.

Originally written in 1992 the updated play encapsulates the feelings of two little Englanders from Hull who have watched their life pass by without experiencing the world.

Joe McGann gave life to a very believable character who is not at all out of place in modern day northern England with a humorous yet totally believable performance.

His nonchalant attitude and quick wit gave rise to some of the biggest laughs of the night as well as the most poignant. “It's hard to be romantic when you're surrounded by genius,” he says when contemplating his marriage.

In comparison, starring alongside him ex-Coronation Street actress, Shobna Gulati provided the upbeat and optimistic half of the relationship superbly.

Coming to the end of a 15 date tour the production and performances were still fresh and full of vitality.

The production made it easy for the audience to be whisked away to the French capital thanks the use of chanson music and even the appearance of mimes at certain points. With members of the audience giving a standing ovation at the end, the play can finish its run successfully on a real high note.
