AN asylum-seeker will be sentenced tomorrow for killing a fellow Afghan immigrant in a flat above a pizza shop.

Barat Ramazani today pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Seyed Kabir Ategh Gan on August 15 last year.

The 23-year-old illegal immigrant was initially charged with murder following the death in Hartlepool.

But today, prosecutors accepted his admission of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

No details of the case were revealed during a brief hearing in front of Judge Peter Fox, QC, at Teesside Crown Court.

It is expected that the circumstances surrounding the killing will be outlined before Ramazani is sentenced tomorrow.

Ramazani, of Park Road, Hartlepool, was arrested in Southampton a day after his flat-mate was found dead.

Paramedics were called to the flat in Park Road, above Italiano's Pizzeria, and found the body of 22-year-old Mr Gan.

Cleveland Police said at the time that Mr Gan had suffered multiple stab wounds as well as other injuries.

Ramazini's plea to manslaughter was accepted after lengthy medical discussions throughout today.

Adrian Waterman, QC, prosecuting, told Judge Fox that he had held talks with a psychiatrist and senior officers from Cleveland Police and did not seek a trial on the murder charge.

Judge Fox will assess Ramazani's potential risk after release from his likely prison term before sentencing tomorrow morning.
