The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, conducted by Vasily Petrenko, perform two contrasting symphonies from the opposite ends Shostakovich’s life and career. The Second Symphony was written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Bolshevik October Revolution. The young composer’s experimental textures and abstract effects are brilliantly conveyed in this recording. Shostakovich’s last symphony includes rollicking quotes from Rossini’s William Tell Overture and eerie references to Wagner’s Gotterdammerung and Tristan und Isolde. Petrenko’s journey through the cycle has been revelationary in many aspects and this, the seventh volume in the series, lives up to all expectations. Highly recommended.
