Oliver Knussen, a champion of Alexander Goehr’s music, presents a compelling album with works spanning the composer’s career. Goehr’s orchestral evocation of Goya’s terrifying painting, Colossus, is coupled with the premiere recording of his early cantata The Deluge, inspired by Eisenstein’s notes for an incompleted film. The CD is rounded off with the neo-classical Little Symphony. Recommended.
Songs, Chimes and Dances: Rob Keeley (NMC D179) This recording presents a survey of Rob Keeley’s chamber works, from the Skalkottas’ tribute Bells of Halkis to the Satieesque Gallic of trio Oregon Moods. These contrasting pieces make for stimulating listening.
