FORTY years after he released his debut solo release, Clapton brings out his 19th studio album. And the legend doesn’t disappoint.
His distinctive bluesy style is there in bucketloads, but there’s plenty more to keep you on your toes with guests including Wynton Marsalis, Steve Winwood and Sheryl Crow.
A firm favourite has to be the Crow-Clapton number Diamonds – a moving, contemporary duet that will tug on every generation’s heartstrings.
Clapton called his album ‘‘an eclectic collection’’, which it is – anything from brass-band-style numbers to traditional blues.
But its secret is an incredibly rich sound with generous layers of brass, piano, strings, and of course guitar, topped off with his unique, haunting voice.
