Steven Russell (Carrey) is a happily married police officer with a beautiful wife, Debbie (Mann), and young daughter.

However, the family man has a secret: he is gay. When he can no longer hide his sexuality, Steven comes out to his wife and moves to Florida with boyfriend Jimmy (Santoro). The cost of living fabulously is perilously high and Steven breaks the law to finance his lavish tastes.

The authorities eventually catch up with the swindler and sentence him to time in prison where he meets softly spoken Phillip Morris (McGregor). The attraction is instant and Steven schemes to become his lover’s cellmate.

Dr Cawley (Kingsley), who oversees the facility, reveals that one of the patients (Mortimer) has escaped and no one has any idea how she could have disappeared without trace. As the cops interview the staff, including the threatening Dr Naehring (von Sydow), Teddy and Chuck begin to sense that something is terribly awry on Shutter Island.

Unexpectedly partnered with the fast-talking stranger, who turns out to be a gun-toting lunatic, James struggles to understand what his role in the mission might be as Charlie shoots everyone in his path. In the process, James acquires a vase full of cocaine and an incredibly tall tale to impart to his doting, seamstress girlfriend, Carolina (Smutniak).
