CD REVIEWS: Odean Pope/Odean’s List (In & Our Records IORCD771022) I haven’t heard much recently by Odean Pope but this could be his finest recording. As well as playing tenor sax he composed and arranged most of the music performed by an outstanding band with James Carter, Walter Blanding and Jeff Tain Watts.

Fascinating notes too by Archie Shepp about their early days in Philadelphia.

Mark Nightingale Quintet/Out of the Box (Woodville WVCD129) The trombonist is featured here in his first funk session and although I’m not a fan of the electric piano or bass (Graham Harvey and Laurence Cottle here) there’s no doubt they positively inspire both Mark and alto saxophonist Nigel Hitchcock.

Tania Maria/It’s only love (BHM Productions BHM10422) The Brazilian pianist and singer’s first CD for five years finds her guesting with the powerful Frankfurt Radio Big Band, her punchy emphatic style fitting in well and the Latin rhythms testing the band.
