CD REVIEWS: Humphrey Lyttelton 1959 (Lake LACD282) Producer Paul Adams calls this band, with Tony Coe, Joe Temperley and Jimmy Skidmore, one of Humph’s finest and I’m inclined to agree.
This set combines two LPs, Humph Dedicates and Triple Exposure, both previously available on CD but here you get not only two CDs for the price of one, but there are six previously unissued tracks.
Vintage Bob Wallis (Lake LACD280) Another double CD for the price of one presents some of the rarer recordings by trumpeter Bob Wallis and His Storyville Jazzmen. The 1959 Everybody Loves Saturday Night is added to a lively set issued in a limited edition on 77 Records, with another six newly-discovered tracks.
Meeting Point/Quintessence (Challenge CR73291) New York is the meeting point for this very cohesive band comprising Andrei Kondakov piano, Dmitri Kolesnik bass, Lenny White drums, the ubiquitous Eric Alexander tenor sax and his regular colleague trumpeter Jim Rotondi, all in great form. Kondakov’s Night City is particularly beautiful.
