JS Bach: Matthaus-Passion, Riccardo Chailly (Decca 4782194) Chailly has brought together the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Bach’s own choir from St Thomas, Leipzig, to perform Bach’s Matthew Passion. This is a dynamic account which will hold the listener enthralled throughout, with a compelling narrative from Johannes Chum as the Evangelist. Highly recommended.

Mahler: Symphony No 2, Tennstedt (LPO-0044) This live peformance, with Klaus Tennstedt conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra, oozes drama.

Recorded at the Festival Hall in February 1989, Tennstedt has extracted the full power of the score, laying out the work with a steady deliberation.

Brahms: A German Requiem, Nezet- Seguin (LPO-0045) Yannick Nezet-Seguin, conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, presents a noble account, delivered with painstaking care and finely judged tempi.
