IAN DICKENS Productions makes a welcome return to the Civic with this thriller by prolific writer Francis Durbridge.
Nicholas Ball, Anita Harris and Neil Stacy take the lead roles in a play full of twists and turns in true Durbridge style.
Concerned husband Howard Mansfield (Michael Howe, at top volume) finds his wife Joanna has accidentally shot someone during a struggle at the couple’s home. To protect her, Mansfield calls the police and tells them it was he who pulled the trigger, having discovered an intruder.
Suave Inspector Coldwell (Nicholas Ball) believes the shooting was an accident, but there is much more to the situation than first appears.
When the victim dies, Mansfield finds himself caught up in a complicated web of intrigue and blackmail that includes his wife, her best friend and his secretary. Can’t trust anyone, it seems.
If there’s a weak link in this strong cast it may be Michael Howe, over-projecting to the point of shouting and causing titters in the audience at the very beginning when he gives a line too early, asking Joanna not to leave when she has not yet taken a step.
For the most part, however, the production is well up to Ian Dickens’ high standard. There are some gunshots and the melodramatic climax seems a bit over the top, but it’s an entertaining play that keeps the audience guessing.
