CD REVIEWS: Jen Chapin/revisions (Chesky SACD347) I’m not familiar with the original Stevie Wonder songs but they make a powerful impact through singer Jen Chapin. Her searching interpretations are greatly aided by the striking accompaniment of Stephen Crump on bass and Chris Cheek on baritone, tenor and soprano saxophones.

Gerald Wilson/Detroit (Mack Avenue Records MAC1049) At 91 Gerald Wilson retains his ability to write interesting music, in this case a newly commissioned suite which provides a framework for some exciting soloists. Among them are trumpeter Sean Jones, violinist Yvette Devereux, son Anthony Wilson, guitar, and old friend Jackie Kelso who Wilson first met in LA in 1940.

Trichotomy/Variations (Naim Jazz naimcd131) The first CD to be issued here by this Australian trio with Sean Foran, piano, John Parker (bass) and Pat Marchisella, drums, (their UK tour includes Leeds College of Music on Tuesday). It shows their wide range from high energy through pastoral to reflective, and hints at their varied influences.
