REVIEWS: Sibelius/Prokofiev, Vilde Frang (EMI684 4132) The Norwegian-born violinist presents her debut album at the age of 22. She has chosen three of Sibelius’s elusive and rarely-heard miniatures to companion, along with Prokofiev’s First Concerto. Recorded live with WDR Sinfonieorchester Koln and conductor Thomas Sondergard.
Tchaikovsky: Prokofiev, Gautier Capucon (Virgin694 4860) Gautier Capucon joins Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra to perform Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations and Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante. These live performances were recorded in St Petersburg in December 2008 when Capucon was the guest of Russia’s leading maestro. Highly recommended.
Chopin: Andreas Brantelid (EMI6877422) The Danish cellist Andreas Brantelid has recorded an all-Chopin chamber music programme as the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth is marked this year. The recording, features pianist Marianna Shininyan and violinist Vilde Frang.
