THE folk club Christmas party is a long-standing tradition around the UK, and those clubs who have not already done so will be celebrating in fine style in the next seven days.

There are still a few regular concert events going on, however, such as gigs tonight from Vin Garbutt at Ashington Miners’ Institute and Kieran Halpin at Darlington Arts Centre.

Gateshead’s Sage also has a whole slew of Christmas shows coming up, the highlights of which are Maddy Prior and her Carnival band on Saturday and a rare appearance by Celtic legends, Boys Of The Lough, on Sunday.

Next week I’ll be indulging in a look back at the last 12 hectic months, at the highs and lows, outstanding new albums and memorable live shows in venues big and small.

Right now, a brief look at the weeks ahead spotlights all manner of famous names and favourite faces who are set to descend on the local folk scene.

Established figures like Richard Thompson, Archie Fisher and Tom Paxton, rising stars like Bella Hardy, Anna Massey and The Queensbury Rules, and local stalwarts like Vin Garbutt, Eddie Walker and Marie Little, will all be entertaining us over the next few months.

Finally, don’t forget that all those great folk albums of 2008 make ideal Christmas presents, whether you buy them from the websites of the artists themselves, or from local retailers like Roots 2 Music on Newcastle’s Westgate Road, or John Wright Music in Barnard Castle. You’ll be spoilt for choice.

■ Tonight, Darlington Folk Club welcomes Kieran Halpin. The performer is noted for his thought-provoking traditional and self-penned songs delivered with humour.

His musical ability has been compared to a young Van Morrison. One of Ireland's finest singer/songwriters, he returns to the UK after a successful year in Australia and New Zealand. The show stars at 8pm.
