From Russia with love to Middlesbrough

THE legendary Moscow State Symphony Orchestra will play a major concert at Middlesbrough Theatre on Thursday, May 19.

Established in 1943, the much-loved orchestra plays around 100 concerts every year and, will bring the curtain down on the latest Teesside classical season in fine style thanks to funding from Arts Council England.

The orchestra will be conducted by its widely acclaimed musical director Pavel Kogan, and joined by brilliant young Russian violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky as special guest soloist. Rob Guest of Middlesbrough Town Hall says: “It’s a real scoop for the town to have them playing a relatively intimate concert here at Middlesbrough Theatre. Pavel Kogan is one of the most respected and widely known conductors of modern times, and has recently been described as one of the ten greatest conductors of the past 100 years. Nikita Boriso-Glebsky took the classical world by storm in 2010, winning both the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition and the International Fritz Kreisler Violin Competition. He’s since performed with a long list of major orchestras all over the world.”

The Middlesbrough concert will open with Prokofiev’s triumphant Russian Overture, before Boriso-Glebsky takes centre-stage to perform Shostakovich’s complex and virtuosic Violin Concerto.
