IT'S billed as a Killer Week in Soapland as the folk in EastEnders (BBC1) hold a 30th anniversary shindig to mark the fact that the nation has been gawping at their disgraceful behaviour for three decades. What a time for Peggy Mitchell, adored former landlady at the Queen Vic, to make an appearance – as Lucy Beale’s killer is unmasked, Nasty Nick is declared dead (again – this man has more lives than a cat) and Dean plots revenge on the Carters.

No room to mention that in Emmerdale (ITV1) Andy contemplates suicide and Laurel is legless or that in Coronation Street (ITV1) Jason thumps Tony and Callum tells Max he’s his dad because all eyes are on Walford. Initially, it’s all laughter and joy as Ian prepares to marry Jane (again). Why else would he be wearing a crown of bananas on his head – and don’t say, "because he’s a bit of twit". It’s the dress code at his pre-wedding drinks.

Jane’s wedding day gets off to a tricky start when the bride finds a letter written by Albert Square’s Miss Marple – that’s Lauren – who has painstakingly pieced together the evidence and the clues to the identity of the killer of best friend Lucy, whose body was found on Walford Common last April. She leaves the letter for Jane, who certainly looks as if she’s had a shock. Has she found out that husband-to-be Ian killed his daughter, perhaps?

Well, I’m not telling (because I don’t know – the killer’s identity is a closely-guarded secret) but it does rather scupper Jane’s wedding plans. She gets to the restaurant where the happy (not!) couple are due to take their vows, but how much further the nuptials progress is, like the outcome of the forthcoming general election, anybody’s guess.

The guests press ahead with the knees-up reception regardless. As it’s held in the Vic, the celebrations end in chaos and confusion with Sonia’s face in the wedding cake and Kim going into premature labour in the toilets.

Familiar faces arrive for the wedding. Oh, look, there’s Peggy Mitchell and Jane’s brother Christian. And who’s that? Why, it’s Mad Max’s ex-wife Tanya, comes to sort out the troublesome Branning clan. One face that won’t be seen is that of Nasty Nick. His body is found in fire-damanged No 23, the very place where Reg Cox’s dead body was found when Albert Square let the cameras in 30 years ago.

Fill the Fug, newly out of jail after being set up by Nasty Nick is on the warpath. Perhaps he’s responsible for Nasty Nick’s demise in Kat and Stacey’s charred home. Then there’s Ronnie who’s been in a coma the whole of the pantomime season. Her accident was caused by Nasty Nick, so her loved ones harbour revengeful thoughts about him. And, perish the thought, but his mum Dot may finally have had enough of her son’s wicked, wicked ways and done him in herself – or maybe he’s popped his clogs after being exposed to the fumes of her chain-smoking habit.

Then there’s rapist Dean, who was run out of town after assaulting Linda Carter and now wants revenge. He’s back this week, lurking in the shadows and carrying a plastic carrier bag containing something that will upset the Carters no end. His dirty washing, perhaps?

So who killed Lucy? With 12 suspects, it’s anybody’s guess who was responsible. Detective Emma Summerhayes knew, but in what many will regard as bad timing was run over and died after calling and texting the killer. But come Thursday the murderer’s identity will be revealed. Place your bets now.
