Completed in 1936, but not performed until 1961, Shostakovich’s Symphony No 4 stretched his musical idiom to its limit.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vasily Petrenko, present a brilliant rendition of this shattering work. The opening movement teams with dazzling motifs, while the last opens with a funeral march leading to seismic climax, before ending in a bleak finale.
