SPRING may have officially begun, but wintry conditions remained across much of the region with snow and freezing temperatures bringing hazardous driving conditions for motorists.

Strong winds and a blanket of snow caused problems for drivers in parts of North Yorkshire and County Durham, as the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the region.

The warning will remain in place until 10am tomorrow (Tuesday, March 3), with strong winds, snow showers and cold temperatures likely to stay throughout the day.

John Griffiths, a forecaster with the MeteoGroup, said Wednesday will begin to feel more like spring, with sunny spells and temperatures reaching around 9C.

He added: “The high ground is protecting the region from snow showers but a few of those are escaping across to the County Durham area.

“With the showers coming across from the west there is a good chance a few will get across. The winds are quite strong and it will continue tomorrow (Tuesday, March 3).

“On Wednesday, you will see a dry day with plenty of sunshine.”
