METRO operator Nexus has taken on more apprentices as it expands its engineering training programme.

The firm, which owns and manages the Tyne and Wear Metro, launched its new apprenticeship scheme in March last year and says it will create 30 new posts over a three-year period.

It has taken on ten youngsters, who are the second intake on the scheme, with a further ten joining in autumn next year.

Nexus is working in partnership with Gateshead College, which is delivering training.

Raymond Johnstone, Nexus’ director of rail and infrastructure, said: “The course is an opportunity for the apprentices to learn a range of vocational skills and secure a future in the railway engineering industry.

“We are investing in training so we have the right people and the right skills in place to maintain the Metro system for many years to come.

Paul Gough, Gateshead College’s strategic leader for business growth and employer engagement at Gateshead College, added: “We are proud to be working with Nexus, which has such a strong commitment to apprenticeships.

“Apprenticeships are a great opportunity for employers to retain top talent and secure the future of their business.”
