PRIME Minister David Cameron last night praised the work of the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) as the organisation marked its 200th anniversary.

More than 800 guests took part in the celebrations, which were held at Durham Cathedral and Palace Green, in Durham City.

The night featured a gala dinner, a performance from Durham Cathedral Choristers and a video message from Mr Cameron.

The Prime Minister said: “It is extraordinary to think what the Chamber has achieved over two centuries.

“I’m determined to do everything I can to support businesses, rebalance the economy, and generate more jobs and growth for the North-East.

“As the authentic voice of business in the North-East, the Chamber is an invaluable partner.”

Business Secretary Sajid Javid also spoke at the event, with NECC president, Mike Matthews, hailing the organisation’s successes.

Mr Matthews, managing director and European operations officer at Teesside car parts maker Nifco UK, added: “This event showed our business community is as vibrant now as it ever has been throughout the 200 years.

“We have more to look forward to than to look back upon.”
