SOCIAL housing business Gentoo has welcomed 27 apprentices to fill a range of roles throughout the group, after an innovative recruitment process gave potential employees the opportunity to attend a pre-employment programme.

Over nine weeks, 45 people of all ages and varying levels or experience, took part.

After an interview process with external applicants as well as those from the pre-employment programme, the successful apprentices were invited to begin their roles, ranging from business administration, health and social care, to joinery. Over the next two years apprentices will also study towards a qualification in their chosen career.

Adam Burnikell, 19, recently started his quantity surveying apprenticeship with Gentoo.

He said: “When I was considering my options, Gentoo jumped out at me with the quantity surveying apprenticeship – I was desperate to do it. When I got the letter to say I was shortlisted I was over the moon. As soon as I started my job I was hooked and I’m enjoying every minute.”

Director of Gentoo Living, Caroline Gitsham said: “Through our apprenticeship programmes, people of all ages have been given the opportunity to realise their aspirations, improve their prospects and see exactly what exciting careers are available to them.

“This is not only a great opportunity for the apprentices but for Gentoo as a business. We aim to provide a talented new workforce which will continue to contribute to the local economy for years to come.”
