ENGINEERING and project management specialist AMEC is in talks with outsourcing firm Serco Group to buy its nuclear Technical Consulting Services (TCS) business.

Amec, which employs more than 500 staff across the North-East, aims to raise its skill base in the nuclear industry where it has won several major contracts for decommissioning and power station building work.

Serco runs services from prisons to air traffic control centres around the world, with clients in 30 countries. Last month it was named among the bidders to manage three prisons - including HMP Durham.

Amec and Serco said there was no certainty a deal would happen and that a further announcement would be made in due course.
