THE next landmark in the rebirth of Redcar steel works takes place on Friday when the first shipment of steel slabs are loaded onto a vessel at Teessport.

SSI UK anticipate that the ship will depart for Thailand on Tuesday May 15 with its cargo of 48,000 tonnes of steel slabs.

Phil Dryden, chief executive of SSI UK said “We are delighted with the progress made since the recommissioning of operations last month, and the first export shipment is another important milestone for us in establishing the SSI UK Business. We look forward to working closely with PD Ports to achieve a world class export performance via Teesport.”

PD Ports’ chief executive, David Robinson, said: “The first export shipment from Teesside to Thailand is another significant milestone reached for SSI UK and the Teesside region.
