ENERGY Minister Chris Huhne has unveiled the six finalists in a competition to redesign the electricity pylon.
Design firm Arup, founded by Newcastle-born Sir Ove Arup, is among the businesses hoping to win the £10,000 prize and the chance to update an iconic structure which has remained largely unchanged since it was unveiled in the Twenties.
More than 88,000 pylons cover the country.
Opening an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, in London, showcasing the potential replacement designs, Mr Huhne said that judging would be an extremely tough job.
A final decision is due to be made towards the end of next month. Arup employs about 100 staff in the North-East.
