A NEW chairman is to take over at one of the region’s building societies in the new year.

Newcastle Building Society yesterday announced that David Holborn, a member of its board since 2003, will take up the role from January 1.

It follows the announcement, in April, that current chairman Chris Hilton, would retire in December after nine years in the post.

In addition, Ron Mc- Cormick, a non-executive board member, becomes deputy chairman.

It has been a year of changes at the top for the society, following the retirement of former chief executive Colin Seccombe in March, to be replaced by Jim Willens, so the fact Mr Holborn has been involved with the society for seven years is likely to be well received by members.

Mr Holborn, 63, said: “I would hope that the members would welcome that it gives a continuity.

“In terms of the staff, I have always made it a priority to get to know as many as possible and have visited nearly all our branches over the past few years.

“The fact I have been on the board for seven years and seen the business is a tremendous help.

“Although you can take over top roles it is much better if you know the nitty-gritty of the business.”

Mr Willens said: “I am delighted to have David take up this role. His knowledge of the business and his understanding of the importance of the society in the North-East, are second to none. In the time I have been here, the evidence is very clear that there is a huge support within the business for David and everything he has done.”

Departing chairman Chris Hilton said: “These are significant appointments for the society and I wish them and the society every success in the future.”
