THE first Nissan Juke hits the streets of the North-East today as motor dealers in the region report being inundated with orders for the Sunderland- built car.

Nissan hopes the Juke, the manufacturer’s first compact crossover car which replaced Micra production on Wearside, will replicate the success of the Qashqai that has sold more than 500,000 since its launch three years ago.

It was predicted that it would sell 100,000 a year.

Colin Pybus, of North-East car dealer Benfield Nissan said early signs were very good: “It’s been an explosion.

“The Juke is proving a huge success with Nissan drivers and those moving from other marques, and Benfield have already taken orders for more than 80.”

Nissan’s plant, on Wearside, will produce 100,000 Jukes in the next 12 months and there is a waiting list of about eight weeks for delivery of the car that’s priced from £12,795.

The Juke is the sixth new car to roll off the Sunderland production line in the past eight years.

The Leaf electric car will also be built there from 2013.
