A FAMILY-OWNED builders’ merchant is planning an expansion push across the region as it continues to grow, in spite of the downturn in the sector.

JT Atkinson, which is marking its 150th year in business, revealed it is looking to open several branches across the North-East in the coming years, consolidating its place at the front of the industry.

The business, based in Middlesbrough, is starting its expansion with the opening of a branch in Bishop Auckland, to add to the eight depots it already operates.

The move will create a number of jobs to add to the company’s workforce of about 170.

The company, which already has significant presence in Teesside, North Yorkshire and Cumbria, said it would not yet disclose the locations of future branches, but stressed that “major plans” were in place for the business in the months and years ahead.

JT Atkinson’s expansion plans come after a strong year for the business, despite operating in a sector that has been one of the hardest hit by the recession.

Edwin Atkinson, managing director, said the new branch is the first step in the company’s upcoming growth push.

“We are excited to open the business in Bishop Auckland, not only to give builders and plumbers another option in the area, but also to create job opportunities in a region which has been so greatly affected by the recession,” he said.

“This year we are celebrating 150 years in the business so it’s good to be able to celebrate this achievement with the opening of the branch in Bishop Auckland.

“We have plans to open further branches throughout the North-East, and despite the downturn in the housing market, we are confident about the future.”

JT Atkinson, which also operates under the Hathaway and Hoyle timber merchant brand, has branches in Middlesbrough and Stockton on Teesside, Northallerton and Hawes in North Yorkshire, and Penrith, Cockermouth, Appleby and Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria.
