THE founder of a North-East embroidery business is stepping down after more than 20 years, with his successor targeting expansion and increasing the workforce.

Ron Falkinder set up Initial Images in South Shields, in 1989, which has grown steadily over the years to become one of the region’s main embroidered garment suppliers.

The new managing director will be 26-year-old Graham Welch, who has been involved with the business – which makes branded workwear, school uniforms and sportswear – since he was 12.

After joining the business full-time when he was 18, Mr Welch has been mentored by Mr Falkinder throughout his career, and has been credited as being instrumental in bringing in new technologies and embroidery techniques to Initial Images.

He now hopes to expand the business into other sites across Tyne and Wear, bringing jobs to the workforce. He also hopes to add £100,000 to turnover by 2012.

Mr Welch’s mother, Jean, has also been involved in the business for many years, and will head production and inhouse training.

Mr Welch said: “Having joined the business from such as young age and benefiting from expert guidance from Ron, I feel confident in continuing in his footsteps."
