A SEARCH is under way for the best truck or van driver in the North-East.

The hunt for the Bell North- East Fleet Driver of the Year 2010 is open to fleet drivers and is designed to recognise the high skill levels required by drivers of larger vehicles.

The competition is being run by Bell Truck & Van, the North-East’s largest supplier of Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles and an accredited Certificate of Professional Competence driver training centre, and is being sponsored by Mercedes-Benz.

Organiser Alan Dale said: “Driving an articulated lorry or heavily laden van requires a unique set of skills, not just in terms of safety, but important financial factors, journey planning and knowledge of the vehicle.”

Fleet managers are being asked to put forward their best driver, who will be assessed on overall knowledge, experience, safety, economy, planning and general skills, over a full day, by Dave Boyle, a former Mercedes-Benz Truck Driver of the Year.

The top ten drivers will go forward to a drive-off.

The closing date is next Friday.

Entry forms are available from Bell Driver Training Centres, in Whitley Road, Longbenton, Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead, and Cowpen Industrial Estate, Billingham. Call Mr Dale on 0191-270-0787.
