A WASTE management company is recycling bicycles for communities in Africa.

Durham-based Premier Waste is reconditioning bikes taken to two of its recycling centres across the region.

Even badly-damaged cycles taken to the Annfield Plain recycling centre, in County Durham, and Middlefield household waste recycling centre, in South Tyneside, can be used as parts for other bikes.

A spokesman for the company said: “Across the region many families will be giving children new bikes for Christmas, which means the old ones will end up discarded, no longer wanted.”

The company is working with charity, Recyke y’ Bike, in Newcastle, and Sports Recycler, a social enterprise, in South Shields.

Old bikes need to be taken to one of the centres by January 31.
