BOX office successes including the third episode in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise helped cinema chain Cineworld win a bigger share of the UK movie market, the group revealed yesterday.

Cineworld, which made its stock market debut two months ago, increased its share of the box office by two per cent to 23.9 per cent in the six months to June 30.

The UK's second-largest cinema chain said the UK saw a 9.5 per cent increase in ticket sales thanks to the "robust" schedule of new films, which also includes Spider-man 3 and British comedy Hot Fuzz.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, starring Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley, was the best-performing movie of the past six months. The group said that, while its full-year outlook was very encouraging, the group faced more challenging comparatives over the next six months, against a period last year which saw films including Casino Royale hit the screens.
