REMAINING North-East workers at a crippled delivery firm have lost their jobs.

Staff at City Link's bases at Belmont Industrial Estate, near Durham City, Leeming Bar, in North Yorkshire, and Newcastle were today (Wednesday, January 7) told they will be made redundant.

Administrator Ernst and Young (EY) said 12 workers across the three sites will lose their jobs, with the depots due to close in the next few days.

The move follows 123 redundancies across City Link's regional bases and almost 2,400 nationally after the firm went out of business over Christmas.

Hunter Kelly, joint administrator, said 141 staff will be retained at City Link's Coventry head office and other sites to wind down the company and return parcels to customers.

He added: "It is with regret we announce further redundancies, which will take effect over the coming days.

"Having returned a large volume of parcels, it's no longer viable to continue operating depots and a phased plan to close them has begun.”

Mr Kelly added staff would be paid for time worked in January at normal rates.

However, the RMT union has called for a full investigation into City Link's collapse.

A last-ditch bid to save the firm failed last week and EY previously announced an agreement to sell cages, scanners and intellectual property to the DX Group for £1.1m.

Mick Cash, RMT general secretary, said: "With administrators now conducting a fire sale, it's simply outrageous the bandit capitalists who drove the company over the cliff have ring-fenced their investment as secured loans and will get first call on any cash raised while our members will be forced to wait months and can only expect a pittance.

"The fight for justice for the workforce goes on."
