THREE workers at Tyne Tunnel operator TT2 Limited are celebrating a combined 90 years service.

Ron Henderson has reached his 30th anniversary, with senior tunnels officer Simon Maughan and shift controller Anthony Harbison due to reach the milestone in October.

They will be joined next year by fellow staff members Allan Carty, Malcolm Carr and Karl Walters, who all started work in 1985.

Mr Henderson said: “There is fantastic stability among the team and people have come from all sorts of backgrounds to build careers here.

“I came from the insurance industry and started as a toll collector, and I’ve never looked back.

“It says a lot about the job satisfaction here that among only six people we are clocking up 180 years of service.”

Rachel Turnbull, TT2’s chief executive, added: “The loyalty of the staff here is tremendous.

“As well as these six, we have Ian Royal, who has served at the tunnels since 1981, adding a further 33 years to the total from only a handful of staff.

“During the last 30 years, there have been a lot of changes at the Tyne Tunnels, not least the introduction of the second road crossing.

“The experience, knowledge and dedication of our team has been invaluable in ensuring a continuity of service.”
