THERE is still time to get up close to the work of the celebrated pitman painter Norman Cornish.

An exhibition of the late miner’s work will remain on display at Greenfield Arts Centre in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, until Wednesday, September 3.

Describing himself as an artist who happened to be a miner, Mr Cornish, of Spennymoor, worked underground for 33 years, and spent his life painting images of North-East pit communities.

He died on Friday, August 1, at the age of 94.

The exhibition, Bishop Close Street, has already attracted more than 1,000 visitors and includes some recently discovered work, as well as sketch books providing a rare insight into some of his most famous works.

The Greenfield Gallery, on Greenfield Way, is open Monday to Thursday, 10am to 9pm, and Friday, 10am to 4pm.
