NEWCASTLE UNITED head to Brentford on Sunday for their final game of the season with their hopes of qualifying for Europe hanging in the balance.

What are the various permutations that could play out at the weekend?

NEWCASTLE WIN

If Newcastle win their final game of the season, they will finish in sixth position if Chelsea fail to take a point from their match at home to Bournemouth. That would guarantee European football of some description next season, although it could still be in either the Europa League or Conference League depending on what happens in the FA Cup final.

If Chelsea were to either draw or win their final game, then a Newcastle win at the Gtech Community Stadium would mean them finishing in seventh place. That would rule out any chance of competing in the Europa League, but would result in a place in the Conference League if Manchester City were to win the FA Cup final a week on Saturday.

NEWCASTLE DRAW

If Newcastle draw against Brentford, they cannot finish in sixth position. That would mean they could not make the Europa League.

However, if Newcastle were to draw and Manchester United were either to draw or lose in their final fixture at Brighton, the Magpies would finish seventh. Again, that would mean they would be waiting for the FA Cup final to discover if a Manchester City victory handed them a Conference League spot.

If Newcastle were to draw with Brentford and Manchester United were to win at Brighton, the Magpies would finish eighth. That would mean it would be impossible to secure a place in Europe.

NEWCASTLE LOSE

As with a draw, if Newcastle lose to Brentford on Sunday, they cannot finish in sixth. So, the Europa League would be out of the equation.

If Newcastle were to lose and Manchester United were also to lose against Brighton, the Magpies would end up in seventh. That is the spot that would be good enough for the Conference League as long as Manchester City were to beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

If, however, Newcastle were to lose and Manchester United were to pick up at least a point at the Amex Stadium, the Magpies would be eighth and out of Europe.
