GREIG LAIDLAW felt the strength of Scotland’s spirit was the key factor in the dramatic 36-33 win over Samoa that booked a quarter-final spot against Australia.

The Scots were on the back foot for large chunks of the game, and with Samoa running in three tries before the interval, it was the 53rd minute before Vern Cotter’s side found themselves ahead.

There were plenty of times before the break when they could have capitulated in the face of some inspired Samoan attacking, but they refused to be fazed by their opponents’ approach and responded with some fluent passing play of their own.

Their victory enabled them to avoid a repeat of the last World Cup in New Zealand, when they lost to England and Argentina and exited at the group stage, and Laidlaw, whose 26 points were a key factor in Saturday’s win, was delighted with his side’s character.

“After missing out four years ago, this is great for Scottish rugby and this group of players,” said the Scotland skipper. “It was a really special day with Richie (Gray) getting his 50 (caps) and Sean (Lamont) getting his 100 caps too.

“Sean was saying that in his 100 caps, this is the best squad, in terms of the feeling of camaraderie, and that – as we showed – goes a long way.

“I don’t think we were ever worried, although we were starved of the ball a bit in the first half. We’re delighted to be through, and it’s a great feeling.”

Scotland will have to address their defensive failings if they are to spring a surprise against the Wallabies on Sunday, with Australia’s resilient performance against Wales on Saturday having seen their odds to lift the trophy tumble.

The Scottish backs in particular will have to be much more resolute in six days time, but at least this weekend’s win has confirmed an ability to handle pressurised situations.

“We’re going to have to look at our defence because we leaked so many tries, but I think part of that was their (Samoa’s) ambition and desire to play rugby,” said centre Mark Scott.

“We had a great feeling before the game – the guys were so focused – but then we had that bombshell of a first half where they scoring tries almost for fun.

“But I thought our resolve was outstanding – everyone battled for each other, and it’s great testament to the spirit we have in the team. It’s the closest team I’ve been involved in.”
