NORTH Riding CFA has decided to continue with its Saturday Challenge Cup Competition this season and the third round of eight fixtures will hopefully be played on Saturday.

The Newitts.com Beckett Football League only has one team remaining in the competition, Amotherby and Swinton who will visit Civil Service (York). Another game of interest sees Whitby Fishermen’s Society First Team entertain Leaholm, the league’s first division champions two seasons ago.

The East Riding CFA has decided that all its cup competitions will be cancelled for the the current season – the league had three teams remaining in their competition.

Last Saturday several friendly games were played by some of the league’s teams.

Second division Heslerton entertained first division Rosedale, after the lunchtime sleet the sun reappeared for a fine afternoon of football at Sand Lane, Heslerton.

The visitors dominated the early exchanges, perhaps the hosts showing a little too much respect to their opponents and Rosedale sprang into an early two-goal lead through Ryan Hewison, and a Simon Leckenby own goal with a header following Martin Myers' corner.

However, after a slight tactical change by The Blues, they found themselves on the scoresheet with a fine finish from 25 yards, who else but Morgan Kendrew, winning the through ball and with visiting keeper Luke Simpson in no man's land, lobbed him sublimely.

This gave Hessie much more belief, and though Rosedale were forever dangerous on the break, Gareth Driver once more rolled back the years to produce a string of fine saves, his side looking a little more comfortable. Following a half-hearted attempt by the visitors in clearing a Heslerton corner, Rob Ruston pounced onto the loose ball to fire his side level, helped possibly by the slightest of deflections.

After the interval and a change in personnel, Heslerton, making full use of their 18-man squad, continued to press only to be caught twice on the break by Rosedale through Ben Thompson following a fine pass by Jonathon Seller, and Vinny Dawson following a superb cross by Robin Wilkinson.

Then followed a delay in play as Ruston suffered what was confirmed later to be a serious ankle injury. Resuming play, Hessie would have to re-shuffle the pack, continuing to search for a way back into the game, however a silly mistake would see Rosedale seal things, as Thompson grabbed his second.

Rosedale’s man of the match was Vinny Dawson, playing on the left side of midfield.

Kirkbymoorside Reserves played Lealholm away last week, losing 2-0, but putting in a good performance, with five debutants of which three were 16 years old (Alfie Nichols, Sam Rawson, James Bowsher). All had good games against strong opponents.

On Saturday, the Moorsiders played Duncombe Park Reserves away at Helmsley, winning 8-0. Goal scorers were Alfie Nichols with a hat trick, Sam Rawson, 17-year-old Kit Saggers, Josh Butler, Toby Edwards and a fine team goal from Jason Brown. Man of the Match was Nichols.

Sleights entertained Whitby Fishermen's Academy, winning 7-1 with the game played at Caedmon College, Whitby. Sleights' skipper Charlie Smith blasted a hat-trick and there was even a rare goal scored by player/manager Ed Turner. The other marksmen were Will Cork-Dove, Taylor Humble, who got a brace.

It was fitting that this victory should occur a year after the tragic death of former Sleights secretary Chris Warrior. Man of the Match was Charlie Smith.

Kirkdale United from the first division entertained second division table-toppers Bagby and Balk with the game ending all square in a thrilling, end to end draw.

Rob Galtry fired Kirkdale into the lead, but Bagby and Balk stepped up their game with Reece Windle scoring a well deserved equaliser. Bagby then took the lead with a goal scored by Alex Benson.

Early in the second half Kirkdale were back on level terms thanks to a goal scored by Nick Butler, but Bagby regained the lead with a goal scored by Ben Brown. With seven minutes of the game left, Kirkdale equalised with a second Galtry goal for the game to end in a draw.

Man of the match winners were Rob Galtry (Kirkdale), while club captain Finlay Lawrence won the Bagby and Balk award.
