RICHMOND GOLF CLUB has appointed Martin Catt as 2021 captain in what will be his 50th year of membership at the club, with the captain's handover taking place in unusual circumstances.

With a formal handover during the annual presentation evening not possible due to the national lockdown, 2020 captain Ivan Rookes handed over the captaincy to Catt prior to the closure of golf courses up and down the country.

Catt will be enjoying a second stint as captain of Richmond GC, with next year's captaincy marking the celebration his 50th year as a member of the club.

"On behalf of myself and the membership I would like to thank Ivan for his year captaining Richmond Golf Club," Catt said. "It has been a disruptive year to be captain but still Ivan has raised an outstanding amount of money for his charity North East Autism.

"I joined Richmond Golf Club 50 years ago and it is a privilege to captain for a second time. My vice-captain will be Mick Campbell and I would like to thank him for courteously putting his captaincy back a year to allow me to be captain 50 years after I joined.”

Rookes, who has been captain through the outbreak of a coronavirus pandemic and the closure of golf clubs, added: "I would like to thank members and staff of Richmond Golf Club for all the support they have given me throughout my captaincy.

"It has been a truly challenging year for all due to Covid-19, however, we still managed to get in a lot of events and competitions staged before and after the lockdown.

“I would like to thank Martin Catt, the 2021 captain, for his help and support as my vice captain and wish him all the best for the following year. I hope it is a better one than the last year has been especially with it being his 50th year of membership."
